This course deals with the basics of financial markets. How to value stocks, bonds, debt, investment decisions and firms. Investment decision requires some techniques as well as an understanding of how to calculate the required return on economic investments. The course gives an understanding of both corporate and personal investment and savings decisions. In addition the course introduces optimal choices between debt and equity, dividend policies and the use of options for hedging and investment valuation.
The course covers interest rates and exchange rates in theory and practice. For most companies and households, interest rates and exchange rates are the most influential prices since they affects the costs of loans, the value and return on investments, cash flows in foreign currencies and the firm's competitiveness.
The purpose of the course is to develop an ability to analyse markets from a business, analyst and regulator’s perspective, involving understanding of the interrelationships between the market’s basic conditions, firms’ strategies, and regulation on the market structure and efficiency. Different forms of imperfect competition will be studied, building on basic microeconomics. Then, firm’s strategic behavior, particularly concerning pricing and product differentiation, will be in focus. The course will also include a particular focus on institutions and regulatory reform in Sweden as part of a Swedish model of liberalisation.
To understand the challenges that regulators and mangers are faced with the course combines a historical and an institutional perspective on financial crises with practical issues in the risk management of financial institutions. The course explains different types of financial crises, why financial intermediaries exists, how to identify, measure and manage risks in financial institutions. The focus is on interest rate risk, market risk, credit risk, and foreign exchange and liquidity risks. The course gives a good understanding of how to run financial institutions, sovereign debt crises and how to regulate markets to avoid crises.

This course explores analytical and policy issues related to poverty reduction and sustainable development. The purpose is to provide an understanding of the findings and recommendations of recent and economic analyses related to the growth and poverty implications of development policies, aid reforms and international agreements. After a discussion of development, poverty and an introduction of some basic economic relationships, the course turns to individual policy areas. In addition, the course covers how to measure and evaluate the efficiency of foreign aid, both in general and specific policies.
The application for spring semester 2017 will open in September with application deadline October 15. If you are selected by your home university please ask them to nominate you to international@ffk.liu.se. All nominated students will receive an email as soon as the application form opens.
Application Procedure
When you have been selected by your home university, the application procedure will be as follows:
1. Search for courses in the course list above. Please see under "Course information and timetable" in the left hand menu before you choose your courses. Note that full-time courses at Faculty of Arts and Sciences run during four (4) periods per semester. You can choose only one full-time course for each period.
2, Check the specific requirements for each course that you want to study and make sure that you are eligible for all courses that you select.
3, Fill out the application form on-line which will open in September. The application form includes personal data, academic background, choice of courses and the period of study for your stay at Linköping University.
4, Upload the required documents:
- Transcript of records of all university education
- Proof of English*
- List of ongoing courses
- Degree certificate if applicable
All documents need to be scanned into one pdf file.
5. If you want to apply for accommodation through Linköping University make sure to cross that box on the application form. Please note that you also need to apply and sign up with other landlords and check the notice boards. Linköping University cannot guarantee accommodation.
6. Submit the form. A print-out version of your application will open for your reference.
7. Deadline for Spring semester 17 is 15 October 2016, 23.59 o´clock (UTC+2h).
8. Information and admission documents will be send during November 2016.
