Visiting Students - EUR 1500,00; Fee waivers may apply in the case of student exchange schemes like Erasmus; Students wishing to do a single course unit from an Exchange Package can opt to apply for “isolated course units” where the fees range from €40,00 - €60.00 per ECTS credit, depending on subject area.

The Courses

You can choose five of the following course units:

Optoelectronics - 6 ECTS

The optoelectronics commercial market is under fast evolution, facing the request for new scientists and engineers on this knowledge domain. The optoelectronic subject is prepared for Engenharia Física 2º cycle students, giving formation in semiconductors devices, optical fibers, providing the basic tools to understand the actual optical communication systems. The theoretical fundamental aspects, the design, manufacturing and operation of optoelectronic devices will be empathized. The studied devices are emitters, detectors, modulators and waveguides. It will be also presented an historic perspective of the devices industry and also the future challenges.

Structural Characterisation Techniques - 6 ECTS

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

- Understand the basic principles of the tecnhiques for structural characterization: x-ray and electron diffraction and electron microscopies (TEM and SEM).

- Describe the atomic structure in terms of the packing of atoms or polyhedra and in terms of unit cell content and symmetries (formal description).

- Choose the correct experimental techniques for a given problem and give the correct interpretation of the experimental data.

Nanoscience And Nanotechnology - 6 ECTS

This year the UC curriculum aims to complement the training in Condensed Matter Physics for the students who attended the N&N in the 3rd year of MIEF. In parallel, the course is also offered to the MF students promoting the depth of knowledge in the field of solid state physics with applications of interest in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Will be addressed elements of group theory applied to problems of condensed matter physics, methods of calculating electronic band structures in semiconductors (kp approximation) and explored physical properties of new materials and nanosystems through alternative concepts in electronics, spintronics, photonics and optoelectronics.

Physics And Technologies Of Renewable Energies - 6 ECTS

The main goal is to provide an integrated view of the physics of renewable energy, a theoretical and a practical one, from a general and specialized physics point of view including  technological aspects that sustain these problematics

Radiation Physics - 6 ECTS

Address the physical processes of radiation, its interaction with matter, biological effects and methods to detect and measure.

Complements of Quantum Mechanics - 6 ECTS

This course is designed to complete the initial formation on Quantum Mechanics. It builds on the undergraduate course “Mecânica Quântica”

Mathematical And Computational Methods In Physics - 6 ECTS

The main goal of the course is to deep and strength the knowledge of  methods and techniques of matemathicalphysics and computational physics.

Quantum Technologies - 6 ECTS

Electronic Transport Module: Mesoscopic Systems

Present foundations and technological applications of electronic transport

Understanding of properties and characteristics of nanostructured systems, mesoscopic physics and quantum transport. Spintronics

Module of Semiconductor Quantum Structures

Electronic and optical properties of semiconductor heterostructures, potential wells and superlattices. Formalism describing the quantum modification of the structure of the energy bands and electronic properties of impurities and excitons with reduced dimensionality. Wells and structures with multiple potential barriers. Manifestation of quantum confinement and tunneling in optical properties. Review of applications to devices. Notion of structures and a zero-dimensional (0D and 1D).

 Communication and quantum cryptographymodule:

In this module several topics related with cryptography and quantum communications will be explained, with special focus on the fundamental aspects of optical techniques and quantum key distribution. There will be also presents several results of experimental implemented systems.

Superconductivity module:

Understanding of the basic principles of superconductivity.  Knowledge of the electrodynamic properties of superconductors.  Knowledge of the basic propertiesof Josephson junctions and its applications

Advanced Topics II - 6 ECTS

The overall objective of the course is to give a general but consistent and solid formation of specific current phenomena that contribute most to the physical research in the area of semiconductors, specifically the Physics of Semiconductor Quantum Structures and Physics of Organic Semiconductors. It is intended this way students take a current knowledge of cutting-edge research areas and with greater impact on the scientific community and business research in the area of semiconductor materials. General objectives, it is intended that the student obtain a plus and valid in key areas of current semiconductor physics training, allowing you to knowledge that is more future value, regardless of more scientific or more business activities.

How to apply

Application procedure is similar to mobility applications, that is, candidates are either appointed by their institutions of origin or the candidate addresses directly the International Office that guides the candidate and contacts the candidate’s institution of origin. Application may be done on paper, by post and by email and is checked by the International Office.

What are the necessary documents?

- application form

- learning agreement signed by the candidate and the institutions of origin

- transcript of records
