Autumn and Spring

(valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered) Knowledge in general biology and zoology, including physiology, corresponding to courses (at least 50 credits) which are included in the first three semester of the bachelor’s programme in biology.

English, B1 level (Engelska 6)

The Courses

Ethology and Animal Welfare - 15 ECTS

The course aims at giving an overview of the biology of animal behaviour, with particular emphasis on the physiology and evolution of behaviour and its control mechanisms. After the course, the students will also be well acquainted with scientific methods in animal welfare assessment. The students will also achieve proficiency in conducting experimental ethology work both in evolutionary and welfare related research.

Measurement Technology - 6 ECTS

This course aims to provide an overview of principles and methods of modern measurement technology. In the course the measurement of both electrical and non-electrical signals are treated. After the course the student should be able to:

  • explain simple theories behind measurements of current and voltage of electrical cicuits, DC and AC, with multimeter and oscilloscope, and perform such measurements.
  • explain the detection principle of perform measurements with some physical and chemical sensors
  • explain components and functions in a computerized measurement system including; sensors, sensor interfaces, digitizing, data transmission, data analysis and data presentation
  • implement numeric calculations and simulations related to the concepts in TFMT14
  • demonstrate the ability to calculate the quantitative aspects related to the concepts in this course.

Models in System Biology - 2 ECTS

This course will provide experience in mathematical modeling of biological systems. After completing this course, the participant shall be able to:

  • explain why mathematical modeling is a tool in biological experimentation; explain some of the common mistakes
  • construct a mathematical model of a class of biological systems
  • analyzing, structuring and simulating mathematical models based on differential equations
  • use methods for structured modeling in systems biology
  • adapt mathematical models to measured data
  • validate mathematical models to measured data; basic statistical tests
  • use modern computerized tools for mathematical modeling in systems biology
  • apply and integrate this with knowledge from previous courses

How to apply

The application for spring semester 2017 will open in September with application deadline October 15. If you are selected by your home university please ask them to nominate you to All nominated students will receive an email as soon as the application form opens.
