Environmental Assessment

1st Semester

Faculty of Environment and Planning

Formal Sciences (Maths, Logic, Computer Science)

Higher education degree in Environmental Engineering or in a closely connected area awarded on completion of undergraduate degree

Visiting Students - EUR 1500,00; Fee waivers may apply in the case of student exchange schemes like Erasmus; Students wishing to do a single course unit from an Exchange Package can opt to apply for “isolated course units” where the fees range from €40,00 - €60.00 per ECTS credit, depending on subject area.

The Courses

Environmental Planning - 6 ECTS

Provide students with knowledge and skills to:

- Understand the importance of the territory dimension for environmental problems comprehension, minimization and prevention –  be able to do spatial analyses and identification of potentialities and vulnerabilities;

- Understand technical, procedural and political specificities of planning process;

- To know, how to actively participate in the planning processes, through critical analyses of territorial information and associated decision making contexts, and contribute to the adoption of sustainable development strategies.

Environmental Impact Assessment - 6 ECTS

The aim of the course is to learn the international theory, the practical process, terminology and methods of performing an EIA. The course will provide practical opportunities for students to participate in reviewing and criticizing current environmental impact statements, as well as to use various assessment methods. Students in this course gain practical field experience in applying principles and theories of environmental impact assessments.

Industrial Ecology - 6 ECTS

Specific knowledge allowing the answering to the needs to:

- analyse the industrial systems as an integral part of the environmental systems

- understand the relationship between production, consumption, sustainability and industrial ecology

- understand and apply industrial ecology quantitative analytical methods

Energy and Environment - 6 ECTS

The understanding of the energy-environment relation is essential to perceive the meaning of the concept of sustainable development. For that purpose, at first it is intended to provide a look at the World, European and national energy scenarios. The sustainable development and, in particular, the global climatic change issues are discussed, and environmental policy instruments are presented, namely fundamental conventions as the Kyoto Protocol, and documents as the EU Green Paper for Energy. Then, the fundamental concepts of energy, entropy and exergy, together with their interrelations, are analysed and integrated in thermo-economic concepts. It will be also presented several combustibles and energy conversion systems available at present, been also referred the energy saving technologies.

Modelling Environmental Systems - 6 ECTS

By the end of the course students should:

- understand the role of modelling in environmental management and sciences, its advantages and limitations;

- realize the main principles and approaches to modelling of environmental systems;

- be able to develop process-based model of environmental problem/system (ecological, economic, chemical and other aspects);

- be able to use the developed model to formulate and analyse alternative management strategies contributing to decision making process.

How to apply

Application procedure is similar to mobility applications, that is, candidates are either appointed by their institutions of origin or the candidate addresses directly the International Office that guides the candidate and contacts the candidate’s institution of origin. Application may be done on paper, by post and by email and is checked by the International Office.

What are the necessary documents?

- application form

- learning agreement signed by the candidate and the institutions of origin

- transcript of records

- photocopy of valid personal identification document (ID card or passport)
