Mandatory topics:

  • Introductory notes on design. Identification of needs. Analysis and synthesis. Reliability, economics, availability, safety, etc. Safety factors.
  • Fundamentals of mechanics of materials: stresses and strains, tensors and invariants, elastic constitutive law, strength criteria, stress states in beams (axial loading, torsion, bending, shear)
  • Advanced concepts of mechanics of materials: strains beyond the elastic limit in beams, stress state in cylinders (elastic and elastic-plastic), stress state in non-conformal contacts, Airy stress function and stress concentration effect.
  • Failures resulting from static loading: yield strength design, ultimate state design (Eurocode 3), fracture mechanics.
  • Failures resulting from variable loading: introduction to fatigue, fatigue testing, factors influencing the fatigue behavior, fatigue verification criteria, fatigue crack propagation.
  • Welding and the design of permanent joints: standards, design, fatigue.
  • Design of nonpermanent joints: bolted joints, shaft-hub couplings.
  • Mechanical springs

Optional topics:

  • Mechanical transmissions, shafts and shaft components.
  • Rolling-contact bearings
  • Gears: kinematics, design and verification
  • Fundamentals of flexible transmissions: belts and chains
  • Structural optimization: formulation of a constrained optimization problem, application to examples of practical interest

  • Processes for the production of steels. Classification of steels and microstructural quality requirements.
  • Notes on chemical thermodynamics and kinetics. Mass and heat balances in metallurgical processes. Combustion.
  • Preliminary treatments of iron ores and scraps.
  • Direct reduction of iron oxides. The Midrex process. Mass and heat balances.
  • The blast furnace. Mass and heat balances. Fuel selection based on the TFT-concept.
  • The basic-oxygen process. Mass and heat balances. Process management.
  • The electric arc furnaces. Mass and heat balances. Design and conduction of the process.
  • Refining treatments. Selection of the treatments with respect to the steel production and its quality.
  • Casting of ingots. Continuous casting. Quality of the products and process management.
  • Foundry processes. Basic operations for the preparation of liquid metal. Casting processes. Cost and performance evaluation.
