The "Solid Mechanics" course introduces students to structural analysis concepts, providing a solid background for further fundamental courses like in structural mechanic fields. Basic concepts in structural mechanics like stresses, deformations and stress-strain relations in linear elasticity, are covered in the scope of this subject.
During this course, the fundamental analytical models and techniques for evaluating stresses and displacements in structures are adressed.
It is the main goal of this course on Computational Mechanics to prepare the students to the use of approximate approaches and numerical methods when solving engineering problems. Special attention is given to the formulation and use of discrete numerical methods such as the finite element method (FEM) and its most relevant particularities. It is also important that students comprehend most of the techniques involved when using finite element method software tools.
The students are expected to learn the fundamental knowledge of fracture mechanics and its applications in structural design.
The chair of "Plates and Shells", of the Integrated Master Course on Mechanical Engineering, has direct influence on a wide range of branches within the Structural Mechanics field. Its ramifications are spread over, for instance, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aeronautic engineering and naval engineering. Some examples of practical applications include, but are not limited to:
- metallic structures and construction;
- plastic forming of metallic sheets;
- plastic forming of metallic tubes;
- pressure vessel design and analyzes;
- structural instability and integrity;
- ballistic impact as well as personal and buildings security and protection;
- crashworthness;
- etc.
Application procedure is similar to mobility applications, that is, candidates are either appointed by their institutions of origin or the candidate addresses directly the International Office that guides the candidate and contacts the candidate’s institution of origin. Application may be done on paper, by post and by email and is checked by the International Office.
What are the necessary documents?
- application form
- learning agreement signed by the candidate and the institutions of origin
- transcript of records
- photocopy of valid personal identification document (ID card or passport)
Created in 1973, the University of Aveiro quickly became one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal. Now a public foundation under private law, it continues to develop and implement its mission to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education, to generate research and promote cooperation with society.
