This May, ten teams from across Europe gathered at the University of Aveiro for Creathon 2025 – a three-day challenge focused on creating impactful solutions for a sustainable future. Here’s how it unfolded and what the participants had to say.
On May 19-21st, 55 participants from all over Europe gathered at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) for Creathon 2025 – a three-day innovation challenge, with Unlocking B2B Opportunities in the Energy Transition as the main theme.
The goal was to develop business-led solutions for a more sustainable future in the energy sector. Ten multidisciplinary and multicultural teams worked together to address real-world challenges presented by Prio, the initiative's partner and Portugal’s largest producer of biofuels. They worked on versatile projects, from optimising energy services to rethinking logistics and resource use.
The winning team presented a project called 'Bioneers', which proposed improving the relationship with the company’s raw material suppliers. Another prize was awarded for the best presentation, as a result of an audience vote.
According to Prio’s COO Luís Nunes, participation in the challenge exceeded the company’s expectations.
‘The great diversity of origins and the heterogeneity of academic backgrounds among the members of each team, resulted in interesting solutions without overlapping between them’, he shared. ‘I’m taking away some very promising ideas’.
For students, the challenge was also a unique chance to broaden their horizons, make new connections and help create a more sustainable future.
‘Working in an interdisciplinary team is always a great opportunity to grow, learn and exchange perspectives’ says David Pereira, a civil engineering student at the University of Aveiro and one of the participants. ‘This creates unforgettable experiences and friendships that last a lifetime.’
