New policy paper showcases ECIU University's vision for the future of micro-credentials

As ECIU University continues to pursue innovation in higher education, the latest policy paper titled 'Towards a European Skills Ecosystem: Aligning micro-credentials, qualifications framework and lifelong learning with ECIU University' highlights the significance of micro-credentials in this process – laying the foundation for change and further discussion.
Authored by Dr Mairéad Nic Giolla Mhichíl, Micro-Credential Lead at ECIU University and Director of Micro-Credential Strategy and Innovation at Dublin City University, the paper explores how micro-credentials can be more effectively integrated into National Qualifications Frameworks (NQFs) across Europe.
'The paper argues that if Europe is to realise the ambitions of the European Commission's Union of Skills agenda, micro-credentials must be recognised, levelled, and made portable across education systems and labour markets,' explains Dr Mairéad Nic Giolla Mhichíl. 'Its significance lies in its vision for transforming micro-credentials from isolated innovations into a core component of a connected European skills ecosystem.'
The policy paper highlights the importance of aligning micro-credentials with existing European tools and models, as well as calls for stronger policies to support their recognition, stackability, and lifelong learning.
